We’ve actually been homeschooling for years, and

We’ve actually been homeschooling for years, and part of the reason is because my son is 2e (gifted+ADHD, like me). People assume “gifted” means they excel in all subjects. That’s not what it means. It means they might excel at something, or even a couple somethings, but they learn very differently and often struggle in school. My son is EXTREMELY visual spatial and he’s been diagnosed with dyscalculia (a math processing disorder). I suspect it just may be severe anxiety, thanks to one specific, very bad teacher (before we went to homeschool). His reading, writing, and verbal skills are years ahead, but according to the standard math curriculum, he’s “behind.” But in the two years we’ve homeschooled, we dropped math for a while. He’s got serious aptitude for computers, so we focus heavily on gaming, video production, programming, and audio production. Through gaming & programming, he’s been learning about physics, and can do mental math with some pretty big numbers in his head. But he cannot do math worksheets, quizzes, or anything else that involves doing math just for the sake of doing math.
A few months ago, I made tentative steps towards adding some sort of higher-level math to our days. He, also like me, struggles with basic math facts but higher math is easier. If he went back to school, he’d be put in a remedial math class and forced to do worksheets. At home, we’ve skipped ahead to understanding physics concepts. (Now that he knows what physics are and how it works, through game development, he can go back and learn it. This is how he & I both operate—we NEED to learn the big picture first, THEN go back to the details once we understand how they fit.) And here’s one of the real cool math books we occasionally use. It’s designed for visual spatial learners. We used clay and toothpicks to build polyhedrons and work with dimensional concepts. Everything is hands-on. There’s no worksheets or written equations. But he can visualize solutions, problem solve in creative ways, and think critically.

Oh, hey! Posting and writing got a little sidetrac

Oh, hey! Posting and writing got a little sidetracked by current events. But fortunately, I got to connect with a long-lost relative before the virus-shit hit the fan... and I found out some AMAZING stuff about my paternal family—including confirmation of ADHD and giftedness on that side. I also discovered I look A LOT like my Dad’s grandmother, and my Dad’s Dad’s genes (my grandfather) have pretty much dominated my biological makeup. Also... my mom dug up my old report cards, and knowing what I know now, I was livid when I read them. And then I sobbed. And then I laughed when I saw my Dad’s old report cards... which had the same “capable of doing better” and “not putting enough effort in” comments. Wow.

But I’ll talk more about that later. I have lots to write and say.

I’ve been thinking a LOT about my childhood and

I’ve been thinking a LOT about my childhood and early school experiences. When I went looking for a picture of me as a kid to add to the last post I wrote, I actually started crying. Since coming to understand what it means to be gifted and being diagnosed with ADHD very late in life, I’ve started to crawl out from under the mountain of negative messaging I got throughout my life. No one knew, back then, that I was 2e. All I knew was that every adult in my life was constantly frustrated with me, always yelling at me, or always telling me that everything I felt or thought was wrong. I wrote a post that gives a broad overview of how it was for me in elementary school. But home... and being around my father’s family was worse. I’ll get more into all that later, including all teasing and name calling at school... but I am nowhere near ready to tackle that yet.

And the second one—Christiane Wells, PhD specializes in Dabrowski’s Theory of Positive Disintegration. I am fascinated with this theory, and I’m pretty sure it’s what I experienced a few years ago.
